Essential oils have been used for centuries. They have been used for a number of reasons, ranging from the medicinal properties all the way to the effect that their smell can have on a person. Because of the number of amazing ways that essential oils can be used, we figured we could help explain just how useful essential oils can be. A lot of this is because of the close relationship between our Olfactory System that’s in charge of smelling and our Limbic System that’s in charge of our emotions!
The first effect we’re going to talk about is the mood enhancing properties of essential oils. There have been a number of studies that have all concluded that inhaling (breathing in) essential oils can help to improve your mood! For instance, smelling lavender has been found to have a positive effect on overall mood, as well as stress, depression and anxiety.
While essential oils can help to uplift your mood, they can also help to calm you which in turn can allow you to enjoy a number of long term health benefits. Some essential oils that can help calm you are lavender, lemon and spearmint. In a world where work/life balance can get muddled, it’s important to not let work stress affect your home life. Stress can affect your health in the long term, that’s how you can use essential oils to help mitigate that.
Waking up in the morning can be really hard can’t it? Did you know that essential oils can help that? Eucalyptus, citrus and ginger essential oils have all been found to help you wake up in the morning. Essential oils can also be used to help energise you as well! So if you want to stay more alert and focused at work, you could have an essential oil-based air freshener set up in the office! Bergamot and cinnamon in particular have been found to be energising, helping to keep up your energy levels.
Essential oils don’t just invigorate your body or mood, they can also help you fall asleep and have a more restful night. Sandalwood, cedarwood and lavender are all essential oils that you can use to help get a better night’s sleep. Once you find the right essential oil for you, you won’t have to worry about having mid-day yawns any more!
There are a number of essential oils that will also help your concentration and focus. Rosemary, lavender, lemon and basil are all scents that have been found to help with concentration and in some cases even memory!
While essential oils are amazing and have so many benefits and uses, it’s also important to workout which essential oils you like most! After all, you’re not likely to use them as much if you don’t like smelling them (but let’s face it, they all smell great!)
